MTN has distanced itself from a Twitter account which made controversial remarks in response to a woman complaining about “disappearing” airtime and data.
“That’s sad. At least you still have the land,” an account pretending to be MTN South Africa (@MTNza_) tweeted.
Following a report by The Citizen, the company said the Twitter post in question is from a parody account that masquerades as an official MTN account.
MTN said it regards the response the customer received as insensitive and stated it did not sanction the reply.
“We urge our customers to disregard this Twitter handle as it is not an official MTN Twitter handle, but a parody account that was opened and shut down in 2016.”
It said there were at least six parody accounts purporting to be MTN since 2013. Twitter has suspended several of these accounts, while others became inactive after being discovered.
“This week, we also identified another parody account called @MTNCare_ZA which has been reported to Twitter for suspension.”
