ZTE doubling 5G R&D spending
ZTE said it will double its research spending on 5G technology from 2017, Reuters reported.
ZTE will invest ¥2 billion (R3.8 billion) in 5G research and development, up from the ¥1 billion it invested last year.
China is pushing to build the world’s largest 5G network and aims to roll out by 2020, so the budget could increase.
A paper from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology forecast that the country’s cumulative capital spending on 5G is expected to rise to ¥1.65 trillion by 2025.
Companies such as ZTE and Huawei are expected to be major beneficiaries of China’s investment in the technology.
China Mobile started field tests of China’s first 5G base station in Guangzhou last week. The international standards for 5G have yet to be finalised, and are expected to be issued by 2020.
