Apple gets licence to test 5G tech
Apple has been granted a licence to conduct millimetre wave broadband trials using 5G technologies.
“The FCC just approved the company’s application for an experimental licence to test… in two locations near the company’s offices in California,” said DSL Reports.
“The application makes reference to using the 28GHz and 39GHz bands, which the FCC approved for commercial use for 5G services last year.”
Apple is seeking “to assess cellular link performance in direct path and multipath environments between base station transmitters and receivers using this spectrum”.
“These assessments will provide engineering data relevant to the operation of devices on wireless carriers’ future 5G networks”.

According to the IEEE, high-frequency millimetre waves will greatly increase the wireless capacity and speeds of 5G networks.
Millimetre waves are broadcast at frequencies between 30GHz and 300GHz, compared to bands below 6GHz used for mobile devices in the past.
They are called millimetre waves as they vary in length from 1-10mm, compared to radio waves serving today’s smartphones, which measure tens of centimetres.
The high-frequency waves have a serious drawback, though – their ability to penetrate building and objects.
“That’s why 5G networks will likely augment traditional cellular towers with another new technology, called small cells,” said the IEEE.
