Vodacom is intent on maintaining its network leadership in South Africa, said the company’s CTO Andries Delport.
Delport said five or six years ago, the performance difference between South Africa’s two top networks was tight.
In the last three or four years, Vodacom has extended its lead – and intends to hold onto it. This will let the operator keep its brand claims, such as being the best network for smartphones and having the least dropped calls.
To maintain that lead, Delport said Vodacom will continue to invest in its network.
Vodacom has a capital expenditure budget of R8.4 billion set for the current financial year, of which around 20% will go toward its radio network, said Delport.
To benchmark itself against its competitors, Delport said they conduct a lot of drive tests every day.
Through the tests, they have noticed that their competition’s networks have improved, but Vodacom is still in the lead.
