Lycamobile is launching in South Africa using Cell C as its host network, the companies announced.
This expands Lycamobile’s global network to 23 countries, with South Africa its first sub-Saharan territory.
Lycamobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) which runs on carriers around the world, including Telstra in Australia, Vodafone in Germany and Italy, O2 in the UK, and T-Mobile in the US.
The announcement of the launch follows Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos stating earlier this year they were in discussions with Lycamobile.
“We are very excited to be partnering with Cell C to launch our offering to this compelling market,” said Lyca Group chairman Allirajah Subaskaran.
“As one of the most influential and technologically-advanced countries in the region, South Africa is a natural choice for Lycamobile, as we continue to expand further into the thriving African telecommunications space.”
