Cheapest out-of-bundle data prices in South Africa

Vodacom recently announced it will reduce out-of-bundle data prices from mid-October.

Prepaid out-of-bundle tariffs will be reduced from R1.50 or R2 per MB to 99c. Out-of-bundle rates for contract subscribers were reduced to 89c per MB at the start of the month.

This follows Cell C reducing many of its out-of-bundle data tariffs to 15c per MB in September.

The reductions come after ICASA revealed its plan to regulate OOB data and data expiry.

ICASA wants mobile operators to send SMSs to users when data bundles are at 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% depletion levels.

Telkom already does this for data on its mobile network, and Afrihost – which runs an MVNO on MTN, offers a similar service.

ICASA’s proposed regulations further stipulate new validity periods for data bundles.

If you recharge before the expiry date of your current data bundle, your unused data must roll over to the following month, said ICASA.

Cell C offers this on its DataExtenda bundles, and has made the feature standard on its normal data bundles.
