Research in Motion (RIM) South Africa officially launched the BlackBerry PlayBook at an event in Sandton on 8 June 2011.
The BlackBerry answer to Apple’s iPad features a 7-inch display and runs on RIM’s new tablet operating system (OS), which is based on QNX.
Initially the device will launch with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi only models, but RIM previously revealed that a 3G model is on its way.
MTN previously told MyBroadband that they were looking at a June release of the device, but have more recently confirmed that they will launch the device in August 2011.
Teddy Maduna, senior manager for device portfolio management at MTN said that they will be offering the 16GB and 64GB models on their 2GB and unlimited data packages at prices starting from R319 per month.
Vodacom’s acting chief officer of corporate affairs, Nomsa Thusi, said that they plan to launch the PlayBook in July and will offer the device in 16GB and 32GB variants. Thusi said that pricing information is not available at this stage.
Cell C was contacted for comment, but didn’t respond by the time of publication.
