Vodacom has released a trading update for the quarter ended 30 June 2018, detailing its subscriber growth in South Africa.
The mobile operator added just under 1.5 million customers in the past quarter, comprising 1.4 million prepaid customers and 75,000 contract subscribers.
Vodacom saw prepaid customer revenue growth of 5.5% and overall customer growth of 9.5%, it added.
The company’s strong customer growth was slightly offset by lower ARPUs, as it attracted customers with lower average spend levels than its current subscriber base.
Listed companies like Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom are required to release their subscriber figures regularly, while Cell C previously released its user numbers voluntarily.
Mobile subscribers in SA
Vodacom’s latest trading update showed it has 43.1 million mobile users in South Africa.
MTN’s latest quarterly update showed it had 29.8 million mobile subscribers locally.
Cell C’s results for the year ended 31 December 2017 reflect 16.3 million South African customers.
Telkom’s financial results for the year ended 31 March 2018 showed an active mobile subscriber base of 5.2 million.
