MTN has just announced (4 August 2011) that it will not be launching the BlackBerry PlayBook as previously stated.
According to MTN, the decision to not range the PlayBook tablet PC “has been informed by the widely publicised customer experience issues that have been raised in the media internationally.”
Teddy Maduna, MTN SA senior manager of device portfolio management said that they are mindful of the market expectation of the device, but “in the interest of offering and maintaining a seamless and consistent consumer experience” they won’t be launching the PlayBook.
“MTN will continue to provide its subscribers with an extensive portfolio of tablet [PC] offers that are complementary to our consumer usage patterns,” Maduna said.
Maduna added that MTN is keeping a close watch on developments surrounding the PlayBook and might review its decision should the niggling problems affecting the Playbook be satisfactorily addressed.
Update: A recent tweet from Carte Blanche, M-Net’s investigative journalism programme, stated that they will soon start using PlayBooks thanks to MTN and BlackBerry.
