Politically incorrect
THERE has been lots of press about one of the bidders in the Vodacom BEE money fest, the Amandla Omoya consortium, which includes some pretty powerful names in BEE, including Bulelani Ngcuka, former Scorpions head and husband of Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
It also includes President Thabo Mbeki’s former political adviser Moss Ngoasheng and former ANC national executive committee member Saki Macozoma — not a politically correct grouping in the new post-Mbeki era.
The Sunday Times reported that Nkenke Kekana, former head of Parliament’s communications committee and regulatory affairs at Telkom, has ditched the consortium to go solo. Former Eskom chairman Reuel Khoza and businesswoman Anna Mokgokong, who were part of Amandla Omoya, had also opted to go their own way on the deal.
I believe that the group is now back together again, not least because there was a threat of court action against the parties that split on the basis of a consortium agreement. Vodacom’s advisers RMB were also potentially parties to the court case, so apparently it’s been decided that they will deal with the consortium and not with individual members of it. Still, it’s going to be interesting to see if this fractious grouping prevails. They are only one of five consortiums in the race.
