Sweden to ban talking while driving
Sweden is one of only a handful of countries in Europe that still allows motorists to use mobile handsets, and has long argued that the conversation itself presents the biggest distraction and danger to road safety.
The change proposed on Wednesday was aimed at harmonising Sweden's legislation with that of other European countries, including neighbouring Denmark, Norway and Finland.
"Mobile calls with so-called hands-free equipment will still be allowed, as long as the call does not prevent the motorist from driving safely," the agency said in a statement.
The proposal, which has been submitted to the government, must be put before parliament for approval but is widely expected to pass.
It recommends that violators be punished with a fine.
