Cellphone activists target xenophobia
Western Cape activists are using cellphones to monitor xenophobic attacks as well as for collecting funds to assist those displaced by the violence. The SMS-based service is being driven by the Treatment Action Campaign and a group of 20 other NGOs.
The project has launched a "No to xenophobia" SMS line where citizens can send comments or report xenophobic attacks. The service also has a pledge line which users can use to donate funds for food and blankets for violence victims.
Behind the project is Cell-Life, an NGO that uses mobile technology to assist in HIV/Aids treatment. Cell-Life’s Peter Benjamin says: "Almost everyone has a cell phone. South Africa, make your voice heard to counter the violence. Tell everyone that South Africa belongs to all who live in it."
