Speak and SMS for free
Israeli start-up Fring has tongues wagging, even in SA. The company promises to change the way people communicate on cellphones, offering them free text messages and even free phone calls. It has drawn the attention of SA investment holding firm VenFin and several venture capital funds.
The company already has millions of users around the world but isn’t making any money yet. PR director Neal Fullman says Fring is growing at 120000 users a month.
The Fring program allows users to make free calls on compatible devices, making it particularly useful for international calls. The only cost to users is the data they use, but mobile data is comparatively cheap in SA.
Fullman says SA has become one of Fring’s most important markets.
Fring was cofounded by CEO Avi Schechter He was one of the key figures behind ICQ, which pioneered PC-based instant messaging in the 1990s.
The company has raised funding from VenFin, Israeli venture capital fund Pitango and US-based North Bridge
Fring runs on Symbian, UIQ and Windows Mobile smartphones.
