New MTN data services expected
MTN will be hosting a press event this week Thursday (29 March 2012) at which the company will introduce new services to respond to the demand for smartphone data in South Africa.
The network operator launched new “smartphone services” in February 2012 that attracted criticism when MTN referred to it as a competitor to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).
There is industry speculation that MTN plans to launch cheaper BIS packages that will have certain limits placed on them.
MTN SA CEO Karel Pienaar previously told MyBroadband that they are closely following usage trends on their BlackBerry network, and that they were developing products which will be aimed at specific segments of the market.

And with social networking platforms such as Facebook becoming more widespread, the appetite for data amongst youth and South African consumers in general has spiked. Forever mindful of the needs of its customers, MTN is introducing services to respond to the demand.
Please join MTN management to hear about the company’s plans in this space.
MTN have neither confirmed nor denied whether the rumours of its plans for cheaper BIS bundles are accurate, and they did not respond to requests for comment.
Previously, MTN SA’s general manager for brand and communications, Ryan Gould, said: “MTN will not comment on speculation. If any developments around BIS occur, MTN will issue an official notification to the media.”
