MTN data user numbers revealed
Of MTN SA’s 10.9 million data users, 5.5 million are 3G devices and 3.6 million are smartphones, but only 700,000 make use of a data bundle, said Mapula Bodibe, GM of consumer marketing at MTN SA, speaking during an event in Rosebank today (29 March 2012).
Bodibe said that this shocking statistic was one of the reasons MTN decided to launch its Smartphone Internet Services data bundles earlier this year.
MTN’s new data packages for smartphones came under heavy criticism for being compared to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and for referring to their 75MB data usage limits as “fair use” limits.
According to Bodibe, they found that the average customer uses 50MB per month.
The intention behind launching the smartphone data bundles was to address this market segment with products that focussed on services, rather than data caps.
