Rain says fixed-5G plan with free mobile data and minutes is going strong

Rain launched its Rain One product in May 2023, combining mobile and fixed-wireless plans with uncapped fixed data, free monthly calls and data for two phones — and the company says it has proved popular.

MyBroadband asked Rain for an update on Rain One and about its plans for the product.

“Since launch, we have had strong interest in Rain One and continue to receive positive feedback from new and existing customers,” said Rain.

“Our high-definition voice uptake has been encouraging to date, and we have seen continuous growth in both usage and subscribers.”

MyBroadband also asked Rain if it plans to launch a standalone mobile service, but it didn’t answer the question directly.

“We continuously review our products and are always looking to bring new products to market,” it said.

With Rain One, the cellular operator also launched a fully-fledged mobile 4G network, bringing South Africa’s number of national mobile network operators back to four.

The other national mobile network operators are MTN, Telkom, and Vodacom. While Cell C used to feature on the list, it no longer operates its own network infrastructure.

However, it should be noted that Rain has a roaming deal with Vodacom for its 4G network.

While Rain is building its own network infrastructure, it uses Vodacom’s coverage to fill in gaps where it doesn’t have a footprint.

Rain said its launch of the mobile 4G network, combined with its fixed-5G network, meant it could now sell a package offering both home and mobile coverage.

Brandon Leigh, CEO at Rain, said the company is confident it won’t follow the Cell C route despite it being the fourth mobile operator in South Africa’s competitive market.

“We don’t believe that because the first batsman [Cell C] went out for a duck, we will as well,” he said.

“We are very confident in our strategy. We feel that we can offer products and services that match the requirements of today.”

The base Rain One subscription costs R559 on a month-to-month basis. It includes the following:

  • Unlimited 5G home connectivity up to 30Mbps, with a Wi-Fi router
  • 2GB of data for two phones
  • 60 voice minutes for two phones
  • 100 SMSes for two phones

Rain said existing customers could upgrade to the new product for the same price they were already paying.

The mobile operator also allows customers to “level up” their Rain One subscription’s mobile phone lines and 5G home Wi-Fi speeds.

Customers can add more data, minutes, and SMSes to their Rain One plan for R75 per level, with level one offering an additional gigabyte of data and 30 minutes of voice calls.

Each level further — up to level five — extends the data allocation by one gigabyte and the voice allocation by 30 minutes. The SMS allocation remains the same for all levels.

For high 5G home Wi-Fi speeds, customers can upgrade their package to 60Mbps for R200 more monthly or 100Mbps for R400 more monthly.
