Smartphones top 32m
More than 32 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the second quarter of 2008. This is according to analysts Gartner which said that this was a 15.7% increase over the second quarter of 2007.
Globally, smartphones account for 11% of all mobile device sales.
The North American market was among the fastest growing markets increasing by 78.7% in comparison with the second quarter of 2007.
Sales of smartphones in Europe, the Middle East and Africa grew by 21% during this period. Western Europe had the strongest growth in the region with an increase of 29.3%.
"Although global smartphone sales to end users [in the first half of 2008] reached 64 million units, up 22 per cent compared with the first half of 2007, sales increased at a lower rate than in 2007," said Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner.
Nokia remained the number one maker during this period with 47.5% market share. Nokia was followed by Research in Motion – makers of the Blackberry – with 17.4%, HTC at 4.1% and Sharp with 4.1%.
