South African neighbourhoods with the fastest mobile data speeds – One province dominates

New research shows that Sandown, Sandton is the neighbourhood with the fastest mobile network download speeds in South Africa.

This is according to an analysis by MyBroadband Insights, which analysed data collected by the MyBroadband Speed Test mobile app from the fourth quarter of 2024.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of South Africans run speed tests on their smartphones using the MyBroadband Speed Test app to ensure their connections are working or to see how their provider is faring.

The MyBroadband Speed Test app provides these users with their download speed, upload speed, latency, and signal strength — and after receiving their results, they can rate their satisfaction on a five-star scale.

MyBroadband Insights used the data collected by the MyBroadband Speed Test App to determine which South African neighbourhoods enjoy the best mobile broadband speeds.

The results showed that Sandown residents experienced impressive average download speeds of 180Mbps, upload speeds of 34Mbps, and latency of only 22ms.

Highveld Techno Park, Centurion took second place in the rankings, achieving average mobile download speeds of 172Mbps, upload speeds of 29Mbps, and 22ms latency.

The third position was taken by Noordwyk, Midrand, which achieved download speeds of 156Mbps, upload speeds of 28Mbps, and 22ms latency.

Interestingly, the data showed that the top seven suburbs with the fastest mobile network download speeds were all in Gauteng, with Cape Town suburbs Table View and Matroosfontein taking the eighth and ninth positions, respectively.

Umhlanga Ridge in Durban occupied the tenth spot.

There was also a big shakeup in the results compared to the first quarter of 2024, with only three of the Q1 2024 top 10 fastest neighbourhoods making it into the list for Q4 2024.

These were Bryanston and Sandown from Sandton, and Table View from Cape Town.
