MTN launches two-hour motorbike delivery service in major South African city

MTN has launched a pilot motorbike SIM delivery service for its Shesh@5G and home Internet packages. The service promises delivery within two hours in select areas of Johannesburg.

The mobile operator launched its Shesh@5G Home Internet packages in March, offering customers a taste of its 5G speeds for under R400 per month.

“This is another ambition to bring seamless 5G Home connectivity to customers,” said MTN South Africa general manager for online and telesales Tania Ladopoulou.

“As South Africa’s best network, we are focused on ensuring that our Home customers enjoy the best possible experience with the country’s most reliable and fastest 5G coverage.”

Ladopoulou said their new motorbike delivery service means customers no longer have to stand in queues or wait 24 to 48 hours for delivery.

“With this new service, we are putting our customers first by delivering convenience, speed, and connection right to their doorstep,” said Ladopoulou.

“Whether you’re connecting for the first time or upgrading to Shesh@5G, MTN is putting the power of instant connectivity in your hands.”

To use the Shesh@5G Motor Bike SIM delivery service, customers must place an order through MTN’s digital platforms.

After a scooter arrives at their location with their Shesh@5G SIM card or Home connectivity package, customers can self-RICA using the new MTN app and be connected within minutes.

Following the success of the Johannesburg rollout, MTN plans to scale the service nationwide.

“MTN is committed to bold innovation that improves lives,” promised Ladopoulou added.

“The Shesh@5G Motor Bike SIM delivery service is just the beginning of our journey to deliver a seamless, modern, connected life for all.”

Priced at R329 per month, the Shesh@200 packages come with monthly allocations of 100GB data at best-effort 5G speeds and another 100GB at 10Mbps on MTN’s fixed-LTE network.

After the first 200GB data is consumed, speeds are throttled down to 512Kbps for the rest of the month.

The Shesh@600 product for R399 per month includes 300GB data at 5G speeds and 300GB data at 20Mbps LTE speeds. Speeds are also throttled to 512Kbps after the initial allocation is consumed.

Both packages are available month-to-month with no cancellation penalties and include a free-to-use router.

5G speeds

MTN said 5G speeds enabled zero buffering when streaming movies and series, having multiple family members connected at the same time, low-latency online gaming, and effortless connectivity for smart home devices like cameras, lighting, vacuums, and more.

“Additionally, 5G offers faster download and upload speeds, enhanced video calling quality, and improved reliability for remote work and online education,” MTN stated.

For customers seeking more data, MTN also offers the Home Internet Ultra fixed-5G package with 60Mbps speeds, throttled to 2Mbps after reaching the fair usage policy (FUP) threshold of 800GB.
