MTN to throttle BlackBerry abusers
MTN said today (1 November 2012) that it is introducing new measures that will help to ensure an improved Internet experience for all BlackBerry customers on its network.
MTN will start to manage usage speeds (hence, throttle the speeds) that fall outside the intended parameters (browsing, e-mail and links to websites) for the BlackBerry Internet Service.
MTN explained that the throttled services will include streaming, downloading of files and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the BlackBerry network.
The operator said that this measure was needed “due to a select number of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) users that regularly download and stream large amounts of content outside of MTN’s fair usage policies, ultimately impacting MTN’s network capacity.”
“MTN is putting regular traffic monitoring measures in place to ensure BlackBerry customers get the best experience on their network,” the company said.
Devan Chetty, general manager for core & IP planning at MTN SA, explained that the aim of this measure is to ensure that the current over-usage by a small group of heavy data downloaders does not negatively affect the Internet experience for everyone else.
