8ta downtime complaints

Complaints are flooding in on social networks that 8ta is experiencing downtime in many parts of the country. According to user feedback the problem started in the early morning of 6 December, 2012.

“8ta is down for me at home and at work? I live in Johannesburg South,” said one user on the MyBroadband forums.

Other forum members in Constantia in Cape Town and in Pretoria East confirmed that they are also experiencing problems.

“I tried connecting my USB modem through 8ta connect and got a connection refused error,” explained one 8ta subscriber.

There were also complaints on Twitter. “My phone is striking this morning! @8ta are we having problems?” asked one Twitter user.

“It seems there’s no @8tada service this morning. Please advise if there’s network issues that you’re aware of,” said another 8ta user.

8ta was asked for comment, but the company did not provide details by the time of publication.

Update from Telkom

System-generated alarms on Telkom’s mobile data network indicated instability briefly between 5am and 6am this morning during downtime scheduled to upgrade key network elements. The upgrade did not affect the voice network.

The data network has since been stable and no other problems and outages have been reported. Technical personnel will continue to monitor the network together with network suppliers.

The complications that were experienced during the upgrade is indicated in the Root Cause Analysis and relevant measures are being discussed with the applicable supplier to ensure that a re-occurrence is prevented. Telkom apologised to its customers for the inconvenience caused.
