900 petabytes mobile data traffic per month
Akamai released its State of the Internet report for Q3 2012 recently which, among other things, showed that global mobile data traffic doubled since Q3 2011 and grew 16% between the second and third quarter of 2012, to over 900 Petabytes (PB).
Mobile voice traffic also continued to grow albeit at a much slower rate, increasing 6% from Q3 2011 to Q3 2012.
This data is provided by Ericsson, which Akamai said is able to measure mobile voice and data volumes thanks to its presence in more than 180 countries and customer base of over 1,000 networks.
The result is a representative base for calculating the total global mobile traffic in 2G, 3G, and “4G” networks, excluding DVB-H, Wi-Fi, and Mobile Wi-Max.
Akamai said that these measurements have been performed for several years and that it is important to note that the measurements of data and voice traffic in these networks (2G, 3G, LTE) around the world show large differences in traffic levels across markets and regions and also among operators due to their different customer profiles.
