Vodacom LTE: faster speeds and better coverage
Vodacom has increased its number of live LTE sites to 542, with close to 70% of these sites supporting MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output).
Vodacom’s LTE network now covers large parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. The operator also has two live LTE sites in Nelspruit.
Vodacom spokesperson Richard Boorman highlighted that over two-thirds of their live LTE sites are MIMO enabled, which provides a significantly performance boosts over the initial SISO (single-input and single-output) setup.
Vodacom was the first South African operator to launch commercial LTE services in South Africa – and since its launch in October 2012 there has been a strong uptake in LTE connectivity.
It is understood that there are currently tens of thousands of LTE users on Vodacom network – many of whom are using iPhone 5.
It is further interesting to note that LTE smartphone users typically use more data than their 3G counterparts.
The higher average data usage is hardly surprising considering the higher speeds and better overall experience associated with LTE.
