Waspa ineffective at tackling rogue Wasp: industry player

The Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (Waspa) has been ineffective at reining in Buongiorno – a service provider which is blamed for unauthorized billing and questionable practices. This is according to a well-placed industry player.

According to the source, who asked not to be named, Waspa’s legal battle with Buongiorno has all but fizzled out.

In May 2013 Buongiorno had millions of rands of fines against it from Waspa, but many of these were disputed or appealed which prevented payment.

Waspa said in May that it hoped to have a resolution to the legal issues with Buongiorno “in the near future”.

However, when asked for an update on the issue Waspa would only say “there is continuing legal dialogue between the parties on this matter and as a result Waspa cannot comment at this stage”.

A source close to the dispute paints a very different picture. He said that the lawyer who Waspa contracted to do this work has been relieved of his duties.

“I doubt whether anything happened the last 4 months,” the source told MyBroadband. “In my opinion this will never be resolved.”
