LG announces Android handset
Mobile manufacturer LG today announced that it has plans to launch an Android based smartphone in the final quarter of 2009.
This makes LG the most recent, in a string of mobile manufacturers, to adopt the Google mobile operating system. Android was first debuted on HTC’s Magic and Dream devices and has since been applied to further HTC, Samsung and Motorola handsets.
The LG-GW620 will feature a 3 inch TFT resistive touchscreen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard, EDGE and 3G 7.2 Mbps connectivity, Micro-SD support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 5 Megapixel camera with autofocus.
“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”
This may come as a suprise to some LG followers. In the past the company has been loyal to the Windows Mobile platform and was cited as one of the primary platforms for Microsoft to launch its new Windows Mobile 6.5 version.
Despite this LG has said that it will continue to focus on Windows Mobile devices and plans to launch thirteen new models on this platform within the next sixteen months.
The LG-GW620 will be available in selected European markets later this year. Local availability and pricing details are not yet available.
