MTN LTE now in Port Elizabeth

MTN has extended its Long Term Evolution (LTE) coverage to Port Elizabeth (PE), the mobile network operator announced in a press release on Wednesday, 26 February 2014.

According to MTN, its customers in the Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Durban metropolitan areas already benefit from its LTE network, which the operator said it is extending to other cities and peri-urban areas.

MTN said that its LTE network now covers approximately three million South Africans with just under 1,000 LTE-enabled towers deployed in the country.

MTN contract subscribers that want to access the LTE network will need to ensure that they have an LTE SIM installed in an LTE-capable device.

Those without an LTE SIM will have to go to an MTN branch with a proof of identity and address (for RICA purposes) to perform a SIM swap.

MTN’s LTE network is not available to pre-paid subscribers.
