20 Petabytes in 2013 – Vodacom Gauteng

Around 20 petabytes of data and 30 billion voice minutes flowed over Vodacom’s Gauteng network in the 2013/14 financial year, Vodacom said during a presentation on Wednesday, 19 March 2014.

According to Vodacom, they saw a 77% growth in data traffic on Vodacom’s Gauteng network last year.

Head of operations for Vodacom Gauteng, Neville van Niekerk also said that 90% of the cellular traffic carried on the network is data.

These statistics support Vodacom’s strategy to aggressively roll out Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology on its network, Van Niekerk said, and they plan to add 555 LTE sites in the 2014/15 financial year.

Van Niekerk said that they are also busy testing the expansion of their LTE capacity by another 5 Megahertz around their campus in Midrand.

Depending on the outcome of the tests, Vodacom may execute its plan to “refarm” an additional chunk of spectrum, he said.
