Teraco and Hetzner’s Cape Town data centres continued to operate without any problems despite a fire in the Great Westerford building in Newlands where the facilities are based.
The electricity supply to the building was cut by the fire department, but the data centres’ UPSs and generators kicked in which prevented downtime.
There was also no damage to Teraco’s cooling system equipment, which is located on the roof of the building.
Teraco CEO Lex van Wyk said the cause of the fire is currently unknown, but it was extinguished quickly by the Cape Town fire department.
While some wireless equipment on the roof of the building was damaged, it did not affect any of Teraco’s Cape Town operations.
Hetzner, which also has a data centre in the Great Westerford building, said its services remain unaffected by the fire.
“Hetzner’s Data Centres are located in the basement of the building and as yet remain unaffected by the fire,” the company said.
“We are closely monitoring the situation with contingency plans in place should it be necessary.”
