Virtual server hosting: More companies to launch services

Cloud services and virtualization have been telecoms and tech industry buzzwords for some time already, but up to now there have been very few actual virtual hosting offerings in the retail market. This is changing – and changing fast.

Many hosting companies including RSAWeb, Afrihost and Gamco are already offering virtual server packages to the public at prices starting from as low as R256 per month for an entry-level service.

The competition is going to get even more fierce with two big players, MWEB Business and Altech Technology Concepts, set to launch their virtual service offerings soon.

MWEB Business recently announced that they will complement their existing dedicated server offering with a virtual hosting product in partnership with VMware and Dell.

The new MWEB Business virtual dedicated server solution will offer clients flexibility; the ability to change virtual servers on the fly, including CPU power, RAM and disk space.

No pricing is available yet, but MWEB Business GM Andre Joubert said that users can expect entry-level pricing to be well below R1,000 per month.

Altech Technology Concepts (ATC) CEO Wayne de Nobrega said that they are also getting ready to launch their virtual hosting offerings, including standard virtual servers, built on a high end VMWare solution.

According to de Nobrega they are planning to offer standard virtual servers as well as custom solutions based on client requirements. The latter offering may well serve the needs of hosting companies which can purchase a multiple CPU and large memory package, and then slice and dice it to offer smaller virtual services to the retail market.

De Nobrega pointed out that they are still busy looking at how to best utilize ATC’s new VMWare platform – and hence they do not have any set pricing models yet. The ATC CEO did say that an entry level virtual server price may come in at R600 to R700 per month.
