European Union to start blockchain research

The European Commission has opened a tender for €250,000 to determine the viability of a blockchain infrastructure for the EU.

The Commission’s objective is to examine blockchain developments with the objective of creating an open EU blockchain compliant with EU law.

The study will address how to create an EU blockchain and look at services which could run on the infrastructure.

It is not known whether the EU blockchain will adopt existing blockchain technology or create its own private blockchain.

The Commission’s call for tenders will remain open until January 2018.
