Samsung has confirmed it is manufacturing chips which are used to mine cryptocurrency.

Speaking to TechCrunch, the company said its semiconductor manufacturing facilities are currently building cryptocurrency mining chips.

The ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) chips are commonly used for Bitcoin, Dash, and Litecoin mining.

ASIC processors are constructed specifically for a single computational task, which make them profitable for cryptocurrency mining compared to general hardware.

Revenue from cryptocurrency mining has increased dramatically over the past year, due to the rise of the cryptocurrency market.
