Prepare for five dark years: report
The Sunday Tribune has reported that Eskom’s electricity generation troubles are resulting in traffic chaos, increased crime, sewage spills, and slow economic growth.
Last week nearly 36% of Eskom’s generating capacity was offline, which resulted in controlled blackouts across the country. This, the Sunday Tribune said, is expected to continue.
According to the report South Africa’s electricity troubles will last for between two and five years.
Many services relying on a steady electricity supply are affected by Eskom’s troubles. These include traffic lights, water works, and security.
The newspaper reported that there is already an increase in accidents on the roads, and security companies are reporting more house burglaries during load shedding.
Water pollution is also on the rise as sewage pump stations are ill prepared for prolonged power blackouts.
All eyes on Zuma’s SONA
South Africans are looking to President Jacob Zuma to provide solutions to the current electricity crisis in his State of the Nation address (SONA) on 12 February 2015.
Many people expect Zuma to unveil a rescue plan which was approved by the ANC’s national executive committee and cabinet.
Some of the possible solutions include the prioritisation of power producing projects, alternative power sources, and nuclear energy.
