Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company is working on a new consumer battery pack aimed at powering homes and businesses.
Musk said the Tesla home battery design has been done, and that they expect to start production in around six months.
According to Bloomberg Tesla will be using its lithium-ion battery technology to position itself as a front-runner in the emerging energy-storage market.
By combining the Tesla battery pack with solar panels, it may well provide an affordable alternative to the traditional electricity grid.
In September 2014 Musk announced they were planning to build a Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada, which will mass produce batteries for cars, homes, and businesses.
“The Gigafactory is an important step in advancing the cause of sustainable transportation and will enable the mass production of compelling electric vehicles for decades to come,” Tesla said.
While the focus is on batteries for cars, the Tesla Gigafactory will also mass produce battery packs which can be used with solar panels to power homes and business.
Another Musk company, SolarCity, is already offering a similar solution.
Cheaper and better batteries can revolutionize the solar power business, and end people’s reliance on traditional electricity supplies.
