Eskom load shedding update: Thursday 19 February

No blackouts are scheduled for Thursday evening, Eskom said.

“So far we are not expecting to schedule any load shedding tonight. We however appeal to consumers to use power sparingly,” said spokesman Khulu Phasiwe.

On Saturday, Eskom resorted to stage two power cuts to build up diesel stocks for open-cycle gas turbines and dam water levels for pumped storage schemes.

Phasiwe said five out of six units in Majuba were producing 3000MW.

One of the units has been taken offline for maintenance.

A coal storage silo at Majuba collapsed last year, triggering a wave of rolling blackouts.

Majuba generated 1200MW at the beginning of the year, he said.

On Wednesday, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown told Parliament that Medupi’s unit six turbine was running at optimum speed.

This paved the way for the synchronisation of unit six, which she expected to happen “within weeks”.
