Police remove illegal electricity connections from shack settlement

At least 200kg of cable providing illegal electricity connections to about 500 people were removed from Zandspruit, a huge shack settlement west of Johannesburg on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Johannesburg metro police department said.

“Four vans were used to transport the cables out of the area,” said JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

The swoop at the settlement which fronts Beyers Naude Drive in Honeydew, was done by Eskom, the SA Police Service and JMPD, and lasted almost the whole day.

The illegal connections were strung from lamp posts and electricity boxes.

Minnaar said there was no resistance, or casualties, and nobody was arrested.

He said the connections were not only theft of electricity, but were also very dangerous.

The cable would be kept with Eskom which would do follow up investigations.
