Eskom adds 930MW to the grid

Eskom has successfully synchronised Koeberg Nuclear Power Station’s Unit 2 reactor to the national grid, adding 930MW of capacity to South Africa’s energy mix.

This follows a planned outage during which maintenance critical to securing a life extension for the reactor was completed.

“This achievement follows an extensive Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme designed to extend Unit 2’s operational lifespan by an additional 20 years,” Eskom said.

“The maintenance programme for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, comprehensive inspections, and refuelling activities to ensure the reactor’s continued safe and efficient performance.”

It added that the unit contributes 930MW of energy to the national grid and will play a significant role in the power utility’s goal to increase its capacity by 2,500MW by March 2025.

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is expected to decide on extending Unit 2’s operational license in 2025.

Koeberg Unit 1 was synchronised to the grid following similar work in November 2023. It subsequently secured an extension of its operational licence in July 2024. It can continue to operate until 2044.

“Unit 1, contributing 930MW to the grid, has shown exceptional reliability since its return to service,” said Eskom.

“Combined, Units 1 and 2 will supply 1,860MW — approximately 5% of South Africa’s total electricity playing a vital role in reducing loadshedding and stabilising the grid.”

Extending the nuclear reactors’ licences is also critical to Eskom’s plans to use greener forms of electricity generation.

“As South Africa phases out some of the ageing coal-fired power plants by 2030, nuclear energy is poised to provide a reliable and stable baseload supply,” said Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo.

“Unlike intermittent renewable sources, nuclear power ensures continuous electricity generation, meeting the needs of both residential and industrial users.”

“Its ability to produce carbon-free energy also supports South Africa’s climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he added.
