Alcatel-Lucent sets undersea data transmission record

Alcatel-Lucent has set a distance record for undersea data transmission, breaking the 10,000km mark using 300G technology.

This is thanks to “an affordable high-tech innovation from the Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks”, which uses real-time processing prototypes of 300 gigabits-per-second.

“This new modulation technology will help optimise the performance of submarine cable systems whose introduction in Africa has seen the costs of Internet services slashed by almost half,” said the company.

The trial was achieved on the 10,000km of ASN’s test bed, combining the 300G 8QAM (8 quadrature amplitude modulation) technology of ASN’s 1620 Softnode platform and second-generation coherent submarine fibre.

“8QAM technology can optimise both existing and new undersea cable systems, enabling operators to deliver more than 15 terabits-per-second per fibre pair on transoceanic systems.”
