Telkom’s fibre network now passes 144,512 homes and 850 gated communities, with a connectivity rate of 13% that is growing steadily, the company said in its half-year interim results.

It said its fibre-to-the-cabinet number now sits at over 1.8 million homes passed – giving customers access to 40Mbps VDSL over a copper last-mile connection.

Ports activated via MSANs increased to 1,278,430, it said.

For the six months ended 30 September 2016, Telkom said it has 42,176 fibre connections to business premises.

It also links approximately 5,600 of its mobile base stations with fibre.

Capital expenditure in Telkom increased 55.8% to R3.6 billion, with largest portion used on fibre and mobile network deployment.

Fibre roll-out capital expenditure increased 170.8% between September 2015 and 2016, from R323 million to R929 million.

“We were negatively impacted by the industrial action that took place in August, which not only impacted our ability to maintain service levels, but also resulted in malicious damage to our infrastructure,” said Telkom.

“We continue to work on ensuring our clients and customers are provided the high-quality service they deserve and we have tirelessly worked to reduce the number of challenges we experience on our legacy network.”
