Most affordable uncapped Internet for fibre-less South Africans

South Africans without fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity can get an uncapped Internet package using one of four alternative broadband technologies, priced from less than R300 per month.

While FTTH is the optimal solution for those seeking fast speeds and uncapped data at reasonable prices, it is still not available to roughly 40% of South African households.

Fortunately, mobile and wireless broadband covers the vast majority of the country’s populated areas and are able to meet the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth.

MyBroadband assembled the most affordable fixed-LTE, fixed-5G, FWA, and satellite packages available from major Internet service providers (ISPs) in South Africa.

Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, and Rain have invested significantly in their networks to not only offer fast speeds, great capacity, and high availability for mobile users but also for those who need a fixed broadband alternative.

Through intelligent network management and throttling of excessive data usage, they are able to offer uncapped fixed-LTE and fixed-5G products at affordable prices.

The cheapest uncapped fixed-LTE package from a major provider in South Africa in January 2025 is the entry-level MyMTN Home LTE product, which offers a free-to-use router and speeds of up to 10Mbps at R269 per month.

However, as with many other uncapped LTE products, a fair usage policy (FUP) applies. For this particular package, speeds are throttled to a measly 512Kbps

Fixed-5G not only offers better speeds but also increased capacity, so FUPs on these packages tend to be more relaxed.

The most affordable fixed-5G plan we identified was available from Supersonic and ran on MTN’s network.

It boasts speeds of up to 200Mbps with an FUP that throttles them down to 2Mbps after the first 400GB of consumption in a month.

Another technology that supports fast and uncapped broadband without a fixed connection is fixed wireless access, which relies on Wi-Fi spectrum to support Internet connectivity.

Supersonic’s Air Fibre was the most affordable, with a R449 option offering 5Mbps download speeds and 1Mbps uploads.

The advantage of this product is that it does not have an FUP.

We also included the two most affordable uncapped satellite Internet packages we could find, which should really only be considered by those who have no other options.

The table below summarises the most affordable uncapped Internet in South Africa that is not fibre.
