Openserve hiking fibre prices

South Africa’s second-biggest fibre network operator (FNO) Openserve will increase the wholesale prices of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products from 1 April 2025.

The FNO typically adjusts its FTTH pricing on this date every year, aligning with the start of the financial year of its parent company Telkom.

MyBroadband first learnt of the price adjustments after an FTTH customer shared a notification from his Internet service provider Afrihost.

“Openserve has increased its prices,” the notification said. “You deserve to have the best experience possible, and this change will help make sure we can keep your Pure Internet Joy flowing.”

On Afrihost, the two entry-level Openserve Web Connect packages will each increase by R20, working out to a 6.1% hike for the cheapest 20/10Mbps product and a 5.1% increase for the 40/20Mbps package.

A R50 hike will apply across the board to all other Openserve FTTH products with download speeds from 50Mbps to 500Mbps.

On a percentage basis, the customers impacted worst will be those using the 50/25Mbps package, which will go up by 8.4%.

The lowest percentage-based increase is on the 500/250Mbps package, where the R50 hike only works out to a 3.6% bump.

It should be noted that although Openserve’s wholesale price adjustments will be the same for all ISPs, the change in end-use pricing will differ from one ISP.

This will depend on multiple factors such as their profit margins and product structuring strategy.

Openserve customers who have not yet received a notification from their service provider about the price adjustment should contact their support teams for more information.

MyBroadband asked Openserve for more details about its wholesale price changes but it did not immediately provide feedback to our query.

We have also learnt that several other major FNOs have notified ISPs about impending wholesale price hikes.

That means that customers on other networks should also expect notifications of adjustments in the coming weeks.
