Best 500Mbps fibre prices in South Africa

Zoom Fibre offers the most affordable 500Mbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) package from major networks and Internet service providers (ISPs) to households in South Africa.

MyBroadband analysed 500Mbps FTTH prices from five major fibre network operators (FNOs) across the country’s most prominent ISPs.

The FNOs we compared include MetroFibre Nexus, Octotel, Openserve, Vumatel, and Zoom Fibre. Other major FNOs like Evotel, Frogfoot, and Vodacom don’t offer packages that match our criteria.

It should be noted that MetroFibre has two networks — Nexus and Nova. We focused on the Nexus network as not all ISPs list pricing for both networks.

The average price of Zoom Fibre’s asymmetrical package with 500Mbps download and 250Mbps upload across seven ISPs is R1,154. It had the lowest average price of all FNOs compared.

Customers in coverage areas can get the package for as little as R1,039 per month through Cool Ideas.

In comparison, MetroFibre Nexus’ symmetrical 500Mbps package’s average price across all ISPs compared was R1,236, with its lowest price being R1,109 per month through Webafrica.

Octotel’s average price for its package with 500Mbps download and 200Mbps upload is the third-lowest at R1,266.

Webafrica’s offering for the Octotel package is the most affordable at R1,159 per month.

The average pricing for Vumatel’s package with 500Mbps download and 200Mbps upload is R1,281, which is similar to Octotel’s.

Webafrica, again, offers the most affordable pricing for the package at R1,169 per month.

Openserve’s FTTH package with 500Mbps download and 250Mbps upload is the most expensive by some margin. The average price for the package across eight ISPs is R1,453.

Webafrica has the lowest price for the package at R1,259.

Openserve is Telkom’s wholesale and network division, and curiously, Telkom’s pricing for the FNO’s asymmetrical 500Mbps package is the most expensive across the eight ISPs at R1,699 per month.

For reference, the next-most expensive Openserve 500Mbps FTTH package costs R1,555 per month.

However, it should be noted that the package includes a three-month subscription to Amazon Prime Video, which costs R79 per month.

The tables below compare 500Mbps FTTH packages from major ISPs across five prominent FNOs that offer 500Mbps packages.

Other major FNOs, like Evotel, Frogfoot, and Vodacom don’t offer 500Mbps fibre packages through major ISPs.
