iPhone 6 event rumour control: specs, iWatch
It’s that time of year again.
Apple has a launch event scheduled for tomorrow, 9 September 2014, and we engorge ourselves on rumours and “leaks” until it is impossible for whatever is announced to live up to our expectations.
Among the latest “leaks” to hit the web is a video purportedly showing an activated iPhone 6.
This leak follows months of speculation that Apple would introduce larger-screen variants of its popular smartphone.
A presentation of spec sheets published on French website iGen.fr on 22 August 2014 seemed to confirm this, listing both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models.
The two devices are set to be thinner than the current iPhone 5s and 5c range, and feature rounder corners that are more reminiscent of the iPad.
Other information that has come to light suggests that a 16GB model of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will still be available at the low-end, and that it will feature 1GB RAM and support for Long Term Evolution cellular technology.
There is also evidence to suggest that the next iPhone will finally support Near Field Communication, something which has been available in high-end Android and Windows Phone devices for years.
iWatch / iTime
A new iPhone isn’t the only thing that’s rumoured to be announced tomorrow.
Apple is also expected to unveil its own line of wearable devices, particularly the iWatch.
This wouldn’t be the first time Apple was rumoured to launch a smart watch, but this time round the leaked details of the device, including its link to new features in the upcoming release of iOS 8, is a bit more specific.
Bloomberg reported during March 2013 that Apple’s smart watch would include sensors for monitoring health-related data (e.g. heart rate monitor, pedometer), as well as mapping and positioning sensors.
More recently, citing sources “close to Apple”, the Wall Street Journal reported that the iWatch would have a curved OLED display, include NFC support, and be available in two sizes.
Users with a relatively new Apple device will be able to watch the live stream of the company’s as-yet unnamed special event on 9 September 2014, from 19:00 South Africa time.
