Altech Node gaining traction
The Altech Node was launched in September 2014 as a “smart home” product that offers a subscription-based satellite push video on demand (VOD) service.
Altech explained at the time that its Node offered three broad services: “Smart TV”, “Smart Entertainment”, and “Smart Home”.
The Altech Node’s Smart Home functionality includes home automation features, like support for accessories such as internal and external surveillance cameras, motion sensors, antennas, Wi-Fi boosters, and a voice over IP phone.
A “smart plug” will also be available which Altech said will allow users to control electricity supply to appliances.
People can also use the Altech Node service to pay their electricity bill, pay their telephone bill, and top up their cellphone airtime.
Altech Node sales targets
Speaking to Business Day TV on 9 October 2014, Altron CEO Robbie Venter said that they have already sold 15,000 Altech Nodes into the retail channel. Altech is also distributing the Node through Autopage stores.
Venter added that their initial Altech Node sales targets were based on a level where the business will be profitable. “It’s between 50,000 and 100,000 units,” said Venter.
Developing the Altech Node
Venter told Moneyweb that the development of the Altech Node was a collaborative effort involving eight companies in the Altron TMT fold.
“The Node was in development for approximately two years prior to its launch, so the coming together of the intellectual property rights was very nice and good for us to see,” said Venter.
“Everything from the payment solutions to the distribution, the manufacturing, the research and development, and the billing system – all of that has been done within the Altron group,” said Venter.
