Wireless tablet charging is coming

Nokia N1 Android tablet

The days when you will be able to charge your tablet without cables is coming, thanks to recent upgrades to chips using the Qi standard, which allows up to 15 watts of charging power, reports semiconductor maker Freescale.

The company says the new chips will be available to manufacturers later in this first quarter of the year.

Up until now, Qi chips only allowed 5 watts of charging, which was only enough for a speedy charge of a smaller mobile phone battery. The phones simply have to be laid in the cradle of the charger.

The Qi standard was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium, which is competing with the Alliance for Wireless Power and the Power Matters Alliance to establish the best method for wireless charging.
