What CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays look like under a microscope
Ben Krasnow has published an image comparing various optical media when examined under an electron microscope.
The image followed a video by Krasnow on the topic in which he also showed how he created a slow-motion video of a vinyl LP being played.
Krasnow explained that he could not place the optical media directly under the microscope, as the protective plastic would results in a smooth image.
He demonstrated how the CD’s label had to be removed, while the DVD had to be pried open to get at the metallic film inside.
Krasnow said his current setup has a field of vision of about 10µm2. Imaging a square millimetre would therefore need 10,000 images, he said.
