Ultra HD Blu-ray on track to launch soon

Following the finalisation of the Ultra HD Blu-ray standard by the Blu-ray Disc Association, 4K Blu-ray movies are set to be available before the end of 2015.

The UHD Blu-ray movies will play video in 3840 x 2160, with licencing of the technology expected to start soon.

The new standard will also include support for high dynamic range (HDR) and high framerate (HFR – 60fps).

The new discs will increase in storage size compared to existing Blu-rays, now holding up to 100GB of content.

“Licensing of Ultra HD Blu-ray is scheduled to begin this Summer (in the US). The BDA is working closely with industry leaders… to facilitate the development of a robust ecosystem to support the hardware and title launch of Ultra HD Blu-ray,” said the Blu-ray Disc Association.
