Samsung Gear VR – South African price drop and wider device support

The Samsung Gear VR will now retail for below R1,500 in SA, and will be compatible with the company’s new mid-range smartphones.

When the Gear VR launched in South Africa during December, its recommended retail price was R1,999.

Samsung also said that anyone who buys its new Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge from a South African reseller between 11 and 20 March will receive a Gear VR for free.

Along with the price drop, the VR headset is now also compatible with some of Samsung’s mid-range devices, including Samsung’s 2016 A-series smartphones – which are available in SA.

While it doesn’t state this on the Gear VR box, Samsung has assured users its VR headset will work on its new mid-range smartphones.

Jan Vermeulen was a guest of Samsung at Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona.
