Smartwatch sales have dropped sharply
The IDC has reported that smartwatch shipments are down 51.6% year-on-year for the third quarter of 2016.
The report stated that total smartwatch volumes reached 2.7 million units shipped in 3Q16 – down from 5.6 million units shipped in 3Q15.
“The sharp decline in smartwatch shipment volumes reflects the way platforms and vendors are realigning,” said Ramon Llamas, research manager for IDC’s Wearables team.
Differentiating the experience of a smartwatch from the smartphone will be key going forward, stated the report.
The top 5 smartwatch vendors were:
- Apple – which posted the second-largest year-over-year decline among the leading vendors.
- Garmin – which posted the largest year-over-year increase among the leading vendors.
- Samsung – its “aging” Gear S2 smartwatches performed well.
- Lenovo (Motorola) – suffered the largest year-over-year decline among the leading vendors.
- Pebble – devices are yet to achieve mass success.
