Motorola Xoom and Atrix: New launch dates for SA

A spokesperson for Motorola South Africa recently predicted that they would have the Motorola Xoom Android tablet in local stores during April 2011.

It has since been confirmed that the Motorola Xoom will only be available in South Africa from May 2011.

The device was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2011, where it was crowned best gadget of the show.

It runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb on an Nvidia Tegra 2 1Ghz dual-core processor and has 1GB DDR2 RAM and 32GB on-board storage.

Honeycomb is the first version of Google’s mobile operating system (OS) designed with tablets in mind, and the Xoom was the first tablet launched that runs the new operating system.

Motorola also announced their Atrix “4G” earlier this year and launched it with the Mototola Xoom in the US.

According to the technical specifications provided by Motorola, the device is powered by a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 AP20H dual core system-on-a-chip (SoC) and shipped with Android FroYo (Frozen Yoghurt), version 2.2.1.

It sports a 4 inch 540×960 qHD display, 1GB RAM, up to 16GB on board storage, and microSD expandable storage of up to 32GB.

The Motorola Atrix seems to earn its “4G” moniker by supporting Category 10 14Mbps HSDPA, which is a stretch for the term by any definition.

Motorola’s specification sheets indicate W-CDMA support for 850, 1900, and 2100 networks, which is rather bad news for Cell C customers as the operator’s new HSPA+ network runs mainly in the 900 MHz band.

The feature that really seems to set the Atrix apart is its “webtop application” which Motorola claims will let you use the smartphone like a computer by plugging it into separately sold docking stations which in turn connect the device to a normal computer monitor and keyboard.

There is no word yet on what the devices will cost locally, but Motorola has promised that they will be competitively priced.

Given the recent reduction in iPad prices in SA, it will be interesting to see how competitive Motorola can be.
