A study by the University of California using the heartbeat measurement app Cardiogram shows the Apple Watch can detect the most common abnormal heart rhythm with 97% accuracy.
The Watch was paired with an AI-based algorithm and involved 6,158 participants recruited through the Cardiogram app.
TechCrunch reported that 200 participants had been diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation as part of the trial.
“Engineers then trained a deep neural network to identify these abnormal heart rhythms from Apple Watch heart rate data,” stated the report.
The study shows that the Apple Watch may also be able to detect an oncoming stroke in wearers, as 25% of strokes are caused by abnormal heart rhythm.
